Sherwood Library Hours Reduction

I am a frequent patron of The Sherwood Library. I am extremely disappointed that a decision was made to drastically cut the hours that the library will be open. I can understand that with the current budget crisis certain businesses and organizations may need to have hours reduced, but I think the reduction from 40 hours per week to 10 hours is uncalled for. My family visits The Sherwood Library several times per week. We enjoy the programs that the library offers and interacting with the friendly professional staff. My 5-year-old daughter loves the weekly story time and my 9-year-old enjoys that movie night activities. My husband is very interested in the history of Sherwood and The Sherwood Library's section of local history is incomparable to any other library in the area. As I stated earlier, I can understand the need for budget cuts, but I think the cuts that were inflicted on The Sherwood Library were drastic and unfair. The Defiance Library received minimal cuts and The Hicksville Library received half of what The Sherwood Library received. The State of Ohio and our US government stresses how important our children's education is, but they choose to reduce hours of the one facility that enhances education. Maybe one family's opinion does not make a difference, but I can gaurantee that a lot of citizens of Sherwood are upset about this and think these cuts were not done equally among the three libraries. I sincerely hope that the Library Board receives many more complaints in regards to this decision and someone takes the time to reconsider and make appropriate changes that will entitle The Sherwood Library to remain than a miniscule 10 hours per week.

Bruce,

You may never go to the Sherwood or Hicksville Libraries. But I go to both. I love the caring, dedicated staff there that go out of their way to help me.

I also love to take my grandchildren to their Story Times. They are educational, fun, and encourage a love of reading.

The staff in Hicksville have also helped me request a replacement Medicare card online and have helped me file my resume on-line.

I also love to attend the monthly Herb and Gardening Programs at the library in Hicksville. There are programs for children, teens, and adults!

The Sherwood Branch Library and the Johnson Memorial Library in Hicksville are FANTASTIC LIBRARIES that offer so MANY valuable services to me, my family, and my community! These libraries offer so much more than just the books that you are worried about.

I live in Ney. We never go to the Sherwood Library. We always go to Defiance.

I hate to see the library cuts but the options seem few. Unless we are willing to have a substantial tax increase for support of the libraries.........we must learn to live with the cuts.

Ohio has the best inter-library loan system in the country. (I have lived in 3 other states) Perhaps the residents living in the areas where the library hours have been cut could use the online inter-library loan system. Request the books and then pick them up at the library when it is open. This allows the library patron to have access to hundreds of thousands of books.

The cuts should have been an equal percentage for all the library branches in the county. An equal percentage would be relative to the size of the library. As it is the way it has been described, it would appear to squeeze the Sherwood and Hicksville branches, supposedly forcing people to drive to Defiance and use the "big" library. No library should experience cuts. The assets they bring to every community are too great. It shows a lack of common sense when such a valuable, far reaching asset is cut.

I think Susiemel2001 misunderstood or did not read my comment completely. I specifically stated that these cuts should have been done evenly. I am being realistic and do not expect Defiance to receive the majority cut, knowing the size of the city. What I am saying, and I thought I made it clear, is that Defiance should have done exactly what Williams & Paulding counties did and make the cuts equal. The Sherwood Library may be small, but it's patrons consist of citizens from Sherwood, Ney , Farmer and Mark Center. If you have ever visited the Library you would know that it is never empty and is usually quite busy. I hope others will read my original comment and understand the point that I am trying to make. Someone needs to reassess the cuts and make them equal among all three libraries.

I think that some may have misunderstood what this lady from Sherwood was trying to say. The library system itself has already taken a 20 % cut at the beginning of the year and now another 11% that the state is asking so the money from the state was cut down to 30% system wide for the library system. I believe she was trying to say and I agree also that ALL 3 locations should have been cut equally not this 20% Defiance Public Library, Hicksville 44% and Sherwood 75%. I do remember reading in the newspaper. Sherwood/Hicksville is small and we all know that but they don't realize the importance of these libraries in the west part of the county. Also both Williams and Paulding counties; libraries all took even cuts across the board for their libraries. Will they be able to past another levy??

What did you want them to do - cut the Defiance Public Library to 10 based on the size of the city and keep Sherwood to 40 that has less people that use it? I know that it's not fair, but come on...it's common sense.
