cemetary rules disappointing

I can't begin to explain how disappointed I was in the city's new rules re-guarding riverside cemetery. furthermore, I was shocked that the crescent news published an editorial in Sundays paper supporting these rules. Most people realize that some pet owners are not very considerate when picking up after their pets. However, I think this is a small minority. I have been frequenting riverside cemetery, and I have been taking a poll of how many pet owners do not have a disposal bag with them. in 4 visits this month, I have only come across 1 person, and he was a teenager. I agree it is disrespectful for pet owners to leave pet waste, but there are other animals in the cemetery that leave waste that can easily be mistaken as dog waste. so, how can the city be so sure that the waste they come across is only from dogs??
As far as enforcing this rule, I find it hard to believe defiance police department needs to spend valuable time chasing down dog owners in an economy that has caused many cuts in city services. If the police have enough time to respond to calls about dog walkers at riverside, why can't they simply cite people who do not have a disposal bag with them. Wouldn't it be easier to make a rule requiring a waste disposal method be carried by each pet owner? i think this would be a much easier solution, and much less offensive.

Finally, I frequently visit riverside, and I am a dog owner, but I seldom take my dogs with me. When I do, I am very respectful of their behavior as are most others I see.
My father is buried at riverside, and I doubt he would be upset by a dog leaving on his grave compared to the ccno workers I saw sitting on the markers, and setting their pop cans on the stones. I think that is much more disrespectful! Kelly Develbiss

The city should set up a nice dog park for people to walk their dogs and not be so smug and high and mighty acting. I think that the cemetary is a good place for people to walk their dogs. The bodies are an empty shell and the person's souls who once were housed in those bodies are no longer there. They could not care whatsoever. This is more for the city to make money from fines if they catch people walking there dogs in the cemetary. I agree that people need to be responsible pet owners and clean up after their pets in any public area. But some people who complain are bitter, closed minded individuals who have difficulty understanding death and the reserrection of the body.

I think if the cops really do spend their time paroling the cemetery for doggy doo-doo bandits they have far to much time on their hands and our tax dollars are being used for the wrong programs. Yes, the cemetery is not a dog park. True. But I think it is just as disrespectful for dog walkers to walk their dogs in my front yard and allow them to "go" on my lawn or on the sidewalk without picking up after. Irresponsible dog owners are obnoxious to the living and the deceased. I just think it's a shame that the responsible dog owners out there (myself included) now have one less safe places to walk our dogs. And on a side note, I agree with Kelly...the CCNO workers sitting on the Tombstones is far more disrespectful than any puppy passerby. Will we be banning them next?

I think if you are a responsible pet owner and pick up after your dog you should be able to walk your dog at riverside. A dog urinateing can't be any worse than any other animale. What are you going to ban next racoons, skunks, and other critters? It is just silly we have to waste our time with rules like these.

I love dogs but I think that the city has done the right thing. Riverside is a cemetery, not a dog park. There should be no pets allowed in Riverside Cemetery(on or off a leash). Even dogs on leashes urninate on the nearest cemetery markers or plants. Dog owners wrongly believe that they have a "right" to use the cemetery for their pet walks. I am disappointed because it sounds like that there will be no real enforcement of the new rule, just a warning (not even warnings in the evenings). So the dog owners who disagree with the new "no pet" rule will just continue using Riverside Cemetery for their dog walks because nothing is going to happen to them. Why don't the dog walkers get together and see about getting a designated dog park in the city.
