I like how all the GM airheads seem to think this town owes them something. Didnt Gm used to employ 4000-5000 people? Whats it down to now 1200-1500 and my god, the fast food places, gas stations and the mall are still here!!! Thats the typical blasphemy and propaganda you hear from GM. Oh once we shut our doors the town will be disintegrated, the mall will close, fast food chains will leave, restaurants will be gone. The world is going to end without GM. SEE YA! Dont let the door hit your rears on the way out. Defiance isnt going anywhere once Gm goes. Do you imbeciles really think DRMC, Defiance Clinic, Koester Metals, DMP, Meijers are gonna close just because you're gone. Get real. Im sure you people pride youselves thinking you make the world go round, but you dont. And how in the world could you possibly think you're overworked? Maybe back in the 50's and 60's, but now anything weighing over 4 lbs. you have to use a hydraulic lift or some other kind of assistance. Can i say pathetic? Go get a real job and lift 60 lbs repeatedly for 12 hours, without any support, then you have the right to complain. But that way be waaay against your ethics. You'd have to go cry to your union and have them come up with a way you can do less work. Defiance isnt built around GM blockheads, GM ws built aroung Defiance. Defiance was founded in 1822, GM plant one poured iron for the first time in 1948, and plant 2 1966. Hmm I dont know how you geniuses figure after being here 126 years and continually growing, Defiance was built around GM. It wasnt, and it will survive after all you arrogant crybabies leave and get a real job making half of what you do now. Guess the jokes on you isnt it. Oh and for all the overpaid GM'ers that think my job depends on you so much, im working 60 hours a week while your company is closing factories and laying off 21000 people. Boy, GM sure is affecting me. Im terrified im gonna lose my job. Oh wait, guess thats your problem nowadays. Enjoy the unemployment line you hard workin, tough as nails, Gm employees. No need to worry, your union will pick up most of the tab and you'll still be getting almost a whole paycheck still. Maybe if you built cars and trucks people actually want, you wouldnt be in the place you are now. And maybe if you werent so overpayed, the vehicles you make wouldnt cost $30000+++. The only people that can afford a GM car, are GM employees. This is wy you deserve what you got coming. Enjoy. I know the rest of America that makes half of what you do, but works twice as hard, will be!

I just recently posted an exhaustive reply to "hmlsadvcte" and his/her narrow view of life in another thread on this site, however, I have to set something straight here too.
I was hired into the apprenticeship program at GM Defiance off of the street in February of 2005. YES! Off the street, not a transfer or a card carrier that had an inside track. OFF THE STREET! And I was one of TWO!
I did not have any noteworthy maintenance credentials or college degrees for that matter either. What I did have was confidence, persistence, and a goal. I was 42 when I was hired. I had already spent 25 years of my life feeding myself without the GM paycheck. I didn't have any relatives working there to get me in either.
I didn't wine about how rotten life and GM had treated me for 25 years, I took advantage of the opportunities before me.
I now am a Journeyman Millwright, and will be graduating from Northwest State Community College this weekend. I am also a "former" GM employee because this economy left me with few options after the orchestrated demise of the US economy. Oh well, I chose my option and I will move on.
Now, I've got a Journeyman's card and a College Degree all because of the evil GM and UAW. And, you know what? I'm ambitious enough to use what I've earned and learned to continue my success.
"hmlsadvcte", you are a classic whiner. Either finish the glass of kool-aide or put the darn thin down, but quit your b***en about the flavor.
YOU made your bed. If you don't like the linens, look in the Mirror and deal with that person. Stop trying to deflate people to your level, try elevating yourself to a higher level instead.

I neither agree or disagree with all posts, however I do believe that in this time all opinions need to be set aside, and work for the good of the community.

to hmlsadvcte, i may not know what others do at work and i do wish everyone made good wages and that is what the UAW and other unions has did for a lot of people. i am very fortunate to have my job and take it very seriously. I also know that there are many jobs that are harder working and get paid a lot less i have did some in my previouse jobs before working at GM. I would just like for the public not to have a bad eye or any of us UAW members to get a bad image through the media, Thanks

You obviously read my post wrong concerning hiring. You simply restated what I said.
And yes, you are an arrogant hippocrite. I may not know what you do at work, but don't assume you know what others do as well. There are many, many jobs that are just as hard, or if not harder, that do not pay nearly as well. You are fortunate & should not assume you deserve it more than another.

to hmlsadvcte, in response of your article, gm has not hired just anyone at all you have to be a relative or a skilled trades person and some of them even came off of the streets but have the skilled trades card and was able to come into the plant and get hired due to our contract. We also have language in our contract for transfers due to their work being moved to our facility(saginaw) and many other work we have recieved. I dont mean to be arrogant but most people dont realize what we (as a uaw members and workers in the plant) do there and what we have to go through. You would only know if you been there and worked there yourself. Thank You to 50 something for the posting on my response.

It's obvious by your article that you are not very well educated. I know many GM employees that have jobs of heavy lifting non stop for 8-12 hours. My father worked at GM and retired 7 years ago. He lifted heavy blocks non stop and without a hoist until the day he retired and they weighed a good 50 pounds. Some jobs out in that hell hole are so exhausting they rotate 4 hours on 4 hours off. It's not the hard working employees that ran down GM, it's white collar high paid million dollar bonus exectives. Maybe if Americans would buy American cars, GM could sell theirs for less!Just wait to see what happens to Defiance if GM folds, you'll be eating your words!

When was the last time Powertrain hired just anyone? You either have to be a transfer from another plant or you have to have a family member already working there.
The attitude/arrogance posted by guardianboxer is exactly why people take issue with autoworkers. Feeling some how they are the only ones who work so hard & deserve the big bucks.
Everyone deserves fair wages.

Duece, you can work all the 60 hr weeks you want it dont bother me at all and while your doing it i can make that in 40hr week easy and maybe while im laid off for 9 weeks too so crawl under the hole you came from!! I could work your job anytime and you couldnt last 1 week doing what i do! Also if you get fired from not going to work or whatever the reason your job place can fire you just because at least my job has a union and can fight for my job and the rights i have being a UAW member and speaking of that why didnt you get a job at GM??

Dear Mr. Duece or juice whatever you want to say no one said this town would go down or end without GM,but it would affect alot of people inclluding yourself now matter how you look at it. and yes there was 4-5 thousand people working at GM but due to outsourcing and gm,s bright idea of having usa made care built in Mexico or Australlia, China and Europe. I bet you probably drive a foreign care dont you?? and that dont bohter you either does it? But see YOU and most people dont care about what goes on inside the plant know more about the jobs and the UAW. That makes me laugh because no one really knows unless you actually work there and there are more heavy parts to work with and even more dangers that YOU know so i dont undestand your reasoning. Also not every one at gm buys the cars that cost soooo much as you say there are many more people who have the smarts to keep the business they do here in Defiance and thats what i want as well to keep my job in Defiance and support MY job and buy cars and trucks and hope everyone else in Defiance would do the same
