Aw, the poor employees of GM. Its funny how all you ever hear about is them getting layed off, but nobody ever seems to mention they will still be getting 90-95% of their pay. Their nine weeks of being layed off is nothing more than nine weeks of vacation. Under those conditions, I'd be throwing a barbecue to celebrate my nine weeks of vacation. Who the hell is supposed to feel sorry for them. They've had it way too easy for way too long. They're overpaid and underworked. I dont have a ounce of sorrow for them. They deserve it. Now maybe they can get a real job out in the real world makin $10-15/hr like the rest of America. They've had this coming to them for awhile, but the morins making six figure incomes decided not to do anthing about. Now when their ship is sinking, we the taxpayers are supposed to save them. If my factory is about to file for bankruptcy, is the govenment gonna bail us out? Hell no, let GM go under, every other company in the U.S. that isnt capable of supporting itself would be shutdown. But the people who've had it the easiest for several years, we're suppose to save. And people wonder whats wrong with America nowadays.

Dear hmlsavcte,
Facts-Higher Education does equal higher pay- Significant over your life time
4 year college degrees- Yes Some Blue collar Workers have college degrees and have chosen to work on the line
Transfers-Most workers at GM have transferred to Defiance due to their loss of jobs at other places in the country due to Americans buying foreign made items.
Last- Lucky me- You are lucky, you live in the USA, go to other countries, see how they live. We are a bunch of spoiled little cry babies.
Wake up
Steve Lamb- Not a GM worker but a proud American

To Truth Hurts...
How many of the people working at GM actually have a 4 year college education? Higher education does not = higher pay.
I do have a 4 year degree. Can I work at GM and get these high wages? No. It is my understanding that to even begin the application process, you have to know someone already working there who will put your name in.
I also wonder what percentage of the plant's workforce is made up of Defiance natives. How many are transfers from other areas, etc...
The town itself may benefit from GM dollars, but my family & I have not. Well unless you consider the higher cost of living created by the GM wages, which means the things I buy costs more based on that. Wow, lucky me. Thanks GM.

Kelly11478, I would like to rephrase what you said on your comment. (I work for a GM supplier)
It should say I WORKED for a GM supplier. Welcome to the unemployment line. After GM has started their shutdown of their manufacturing facilities for at least 9 + weeks you and your co-workers will feel the squeeze of how much GM effects you and your neighbors. Defiance itself is built around GM, You and your neighbors should realize that it is your lifeline. I myself do not do not live there, but I work at the foundry. I hope it will stay open, but if not the city of Defiance, Ohio will not recover from this loss.

To all the people of this community who think that the UAW workers are overpaid and underworked, do you realize what the UAW has done for your job? and the many other jobs that are affected by the UAW? To begin with the safety, 40hr work week, benefits, wages are all in some way due to the blood, sweat, and tears of the UAW. I work at GM and i am proud UAW member. Like most people think, its easy and overpaid workers do nothing but show up and play cards. Then you need to talk to a few of them and they will tell you that you walk into a factory for no less than 8 1/2 hrs a day in the middle of summer at 115 degrees and wearing pants, long sleeved shirts, hats, gloves, earplugs, safety glasses and a respirator because the life expectancy of someone who works at the foundary and retires is about 5-10 yrs so think about that and how your job is then weigh the differences.

It always amazes me that people believe what they read without doing any research of their own.. In some aspects the mainstream news outlets are no better than the tabloid rags...
1. GM employees do not make 90-95% of their pay while on layoff...
2. GM employees do not make the commonly mentioned wage of $70-80 an hour...
Think of all the small business in town that are suffering because of the money not being spent.. think of the city services that we have lost or we will lose or have drastically reduced when GM income tax revenue is lost locally... then when you see more of your money being taken from your check to pay for the taxes being lost because of GM lowering their wage, extended layoffs or closing.. dont complain and remember your words against the local GM workers... If people think it will only be GM people being asked to take cuts, or being laid off, then take a look around... GM affects more in this town then just the people working there!

Well, first of all this is the correct spelling of moron. Second, if you maybe had an education you could have a job that is satisfying, and high paying. Thirdly, how do you know they are under-worked? Did you get fired from there for slacking on the job? Or turned down for a position because you are under qualified? I think that you are just jealous of their salary, and resent the people that work there because you have a low paying job. Also to the worker of an auto supplier, if G.M. goes out of business, your job will go bye-bye too. It is amazing how people with low paying jobs are jealous of people who make good money. Get an education and maybe you can get a real job. If you want to complain about excessive compensation look at the CEO's of America. Maybe you have a low paycheck because your CEO makes 20 times more than you in a week. Ever think of that? And if you want to complain about a bailout, look at the banks who are getting $700billion for free. Its time for you to find a new cause.

While GM has dug themselves their own hole, why should taxpayers bail them out? If GM goes under, much of the town will eventually follow. The stores in the mall will leave because the town as a whole will have very little disposable income to spend. When those stores do leave, so will many Defiance tax payer jobs. GM is the base of which Defiance is built upon. So in a sense the tax payer is paying to keep their job.
While one could debate whether GM wages are fair, the point is the people who were making all of that money, did they save? Look at the stock price of GM for the last ten years; it has done nothing but fall. Signs were present that maybe we shouldn't go on the elaborate vacation or maybe I should buy an efficient GM car vs. buying the Tahoe? While I feel for those currently working at GM, you have to watch your own back as well.

I agree that GM employees have had it pretty good for and long time but times are hard and things need to change. Not all GM employees are underworked or overpaid. I remember my husband coming home from work exhausted and sore from lifting heavy blocks for 8 hours. His back is shot, his wrists, arms and knees are shot along with many other hard working GM employees and they will have to live with those aches and pains for the rest of their lives. I would rather work for $8 than walk into a 150 degree factory in the summer. Give some credit to those who deserve the pay and benefits they earned. Just a note, they no longer get 90%-95% of their pay.

In one respect, you are right; our government should not be bailing-out private sector businesses. Beyond that, you should check yur facts before writing a comment. The suplemental pay UAW workers get amounts to closer to 75 to 80% of their normal take-home pay. That benefit was gotten instead of higher pay when it was negotiated so I think they are entitled to what their contract says.
Also, every hourly worker in this country has probably benefited from union activity at the auto plants. Ever hear of the fourty hour week, overtime pay, holiday pay, or paid vacations? Unions fought for all those things and everyone benefited. the minimum wage would not be what it is without higher union wages.
Thirdly, what gives you or anyone else the right to say someone else is overpaid? Be careful in what you ask for! Do you want a government flunkie deciding what your pay and benefits should be?

Dear Mr. McCallister., We need more jobs paying the wages as GM does, at least theres enough money to live a decent life for you and your family., General Motors is a great place to work and the Employees are a special breed of workers who are not afraid to work and get dirty., I once worked for GM but now I'm working in a mom and pop factory making 11.75 per hour and I seem to struggle for enough momey to get by on.. Yes, GM Employees make a good living, but thats how all hard-working Americans should have it. If you earn it, you should get it...
