Stryker High School Graduation 2009

2009 Stryker High School Graduation

A decision was made at the last Stryker Local School Board meeting. The Stryker school board voted to hold the 2009 Graduation Ceremonies on the "Stage".

The "Stage" is the old Auditorium built in 1957. This part of the building has limited wheelchair access, no air conditioning, poor lighting, poor acoustics, and only seating for 729 people. In the past graduation ceremonies held here have been standing room only.

The citizens of Stryker voted and supported a levy (passing with 64 percent) to build and operate a new school. The local cost of the project is 46 percent. A separate 0.25 percent income tax levy is also in place for operations.

This beautiful new school has a new gym that should be used for graduation ceremonies. It would be more appropriate for our students and guests. This part of building has better wheelchair access, air conditioning, bright lights, new acoustics, and seating for 1283 people. There are 60 seats with backs on the chairs to accommodate our elderly guests.

I am not alone when I ask "Why would the school board vote to hold the graduation ceremonies on the old "Stage"? We were, as residents of the Stryker school system, asked to financially support a new school for our students. We have and we should be proud to show off our new building and gym for our families and guests of our graduating seniors.

The Bryan Times wrote a special section featuring Stryker Schools on Wednesday April 8th, 2009. They said it best with the headline-"Looking to the future". It was time for a change and we provided that changeNow it is time to let our children graduate in their new building and not our old one.
