By LISA NICELY PAULDING -- A man indicted in connection with a shooting incident that critically injured a Paulding County resident has pleaded guilty to a reduced charge. Alfonso Casiano, 27, address unavailable, pleaded guilty to felonious assault, a second-degree felony, in Paulding County Common Pleas Court. Two first-degree felonies stemming from the July shooting incident -- attempted murder and aggravated robbery -- were dismissed under a plea agreement negotiated with the county prosecutor's office. A gun specification with the assault charge was also dismissed. "Given the amount of evidence we had, the felonious assault charge was more appropriate without the gun specification," said county Prosecutor Joseph Burkard. Sentencing for Casiano, who is being held at the Van Wert County Jail on a $200,000 bond with no 10 percent provision, was set for Dec. 7 by Judge J. David Webb. Under Ohio Revised Code, the maximum sentence Casiano could receive is eight years in prison. Casiano was indicted Aug. 13 by a county grand jury and was arrested Sept. 16 in Fort Wayne. The indictment stems from an alleged incident on July 24 at the Auglaize Township Road 153 residence of Julian Zamora, 36. According to court documents, two men allegedly entered Zamora's home and one suspect shot Zamora in the head, stomach and back in one room. Another man forced a woman into a bedroom, court documents allege, where another woman was and demanded money. Officials allege a third suspect served as a lookout during the incident. Zamora was critically injured and taken by air ambulance to Toledo Hospital. He has since been released. According to authorities, a television and credit card were allegedly taken in the robbery. Burkard said that under the plea agreement certain conditions must be met. "He must give a truthful statement of facts and of the alleged two others," he said. Burkard also said the other two suspects, whose names have not been released, may face charges. "We'll evaluate that based on information as we receive it," he said. Comments
