The garden bed that sits on top of a slight hill to the south of the Barb and Richard Gray property is such an amazing accomplishment, that it was no wonder it was chosen as the Garden of the Month for September by the Just Add Water garden club.

Barb Gray said she began working on the 100-foot long garden bed six years ago when she first moved to the property located near Brunersburg at 1431 Riverbend Drive.

The garden bed measures about five feet wide and circles around the house on the top of a slight hill that faces Ohio 15.

Clumps of ribbon and zebra grass wave gently in the breeze while the bright purple flowers of an aster, the pale pink of snapdragons and rose-colored zinnias add color to the heavily mulched bed.

Cleome, anemonies, sedum, zinnias and cheerful pots of mums fill the bare spots left by spring and early-summer flowers. An old hand pump and other garden accessories lend a country touch to the garden bed.

Near the house, in a small garden bed, pink sweet peas still show a few blossoms while hollyhocks and cosmos add their pretty flowers.

Gray said she uses a lot of mulch because it keeps weeds down and helps the look of the garden beds.

Around the Gray mailbox, a small collection of red flowers stands out next to a planting of Dusty Miller. When a visitor sees the big Red "O" for Ohio State in the yard and the Ohio State marking on a tiny bird house next to the mailbox, it becomes clear that the red and gray flowers were planted in support of Ohio State University.

Gray said she spends many hours working on her flower bed.

"I filled it with lots of flowers," Gray said. "I didn't think I could mess it up by planting lots of flowers," she said.

The Just Add Water garden club will meet at 6 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 26 at the Carol Maag residence at 23852 Flory Road. New members are welcome; call 419-784-6410 for more information.

The garden club is also asking the public for nominations for Garden of the Month in October. A display of fall flowers with fall-decor items is acceptable.

The nomination form often runs on the Lifestyle page.
