The second tea party in three months to protest burgeoning government is scheduled Saturday in Defiance on Independence Day.
The event is planned from 1-4:30 p.m. at Defiance's Pontiac Park, and follows a tea party held April 15 -- the income tax filing deadline -- on the Defiance County Courthouse steps.
According to the Internet website www.defiancefreedom.com, 10 speakers are planned, including Dr. Nikolai Wenzel, professor of economics at Hillsdale College and Jim Babka of the national organization Downsize DC.
The Internet website www.defiancefreedom.com that "as July 4 is our national holiday to celebrate freedom from oppressive government, area citizens will listen to speakers and have the opportunity to express their growing discontent."
One event organizer -- Sharon Osborne of rural Napoleon -- said "we are gathering in Defiance to discuss the disappearing freedoms in our country, the lack of accountability and what looks to be a very bleak future if we do nothing to stop the assault against our liberties."
Osborne will speak along with her husband, Jason, who owns Sakal Credit Adjustments in Defiance.
They and others also helped organize the April 15 tea party in which, Sharon Osborne said, 225 people attended on a chilly, drizzly day. She is hoping for 1,000 attendees this time, having promoted the event via newspaper, radio, flyers and the Internet.
"It's really hard to say," said Osborne. "We're hoping for 1,000."
The tea party takes its name after the famous 1773 event in Boston Harbor where American colonists dumped tea in the ocean to protest British tax policy.
The Defiance tea party is just one of many that are planned across U.S. cities Saturday.
