The photography staff of the Florida Times-Union had a very interesting day last week.

On June 26, Jason Pratt, Bob Self, Will Dickey, Rick Wilson, Bob Mack and Kelly Jordan all captured some amazing pictures of a waterspout as it moved across the St. Johns River during afternoon rush-hour in downtown Jacksonville.

Go to http://blogs.dixcdn.com/caught_in_the_web and the first entry is titled "Waterspout photos." Click on "Jacksonville.com" and you will see the photos. Click on the solid single right-arrow (above the photo) to view the waterspout photos in an automated slideshow presentation.

'Life in a Year'

The San Jose Mercury News is running a 12-part series -- over 12 months -- that chronicles "Life in a Year."

According to the website, the series started with a story in January 2009 about the birth of one Los Gatos family's child. The series continues for 12 months about the rites of passage that "make up the dramatic tapestry of what might otherwise seem to be ordinary lives."

They're seven months into the project, and so far, this is a great piece of journalism -- both from a writing standpoint and with their video technology as well.

Take a look at the series articles and view video productions of each article at www.mercurynews.com/life-in-a-year

Birthday boy, 71, jumps

In Florida, Paul Herrick did something special for his 71st birthday. He celebrated by skydiving into the ocean. He's had a couple of tense situations skydiving on land, so Herrick has decided that any more skydiving will be done over the ocean.

Read the article at www.tcpalm.com/news/2009/jun/26/despite-near-misses-skydiver-takes-leap-on-71st/ and then watch the video at www.tcpalm.com/videos/detail/birthday--boy--jumps--for--joy/

The video is good, but I was a bit disappointed that there was no video of him actually landing in the water. It's possible that the newspaper wasn't allowed to videotape the landing, too.

185 mph?

A lot of interesting things happened in Florida last week and this week...

In Ocala, Fla., a man reached speeds of 185 mph with his high-powered motorcycle as he led police in a chase where he wrecked the bike and shattered his arm in the process. He's lucky he wasn't killed, but told the Ocala.com, "If I didn't know how to fall, I would be dead now."
