COLUMBUS -- The Ohio Department of Education has announced that 108 high school seniors have been selected to receive the 2009-10 Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship. The Byrd Scholarship, a federally funded program, provides $1,500 per year, for up to four years, for each student at an accredited institution of higher learning in the United States. Local recipients include Andrew Kieffer, Ayersville High School; Alyssa Beck, Pettisville High School; and Lance Gerdeman, Fort Jennings High School. "Ohio has a strong tradition of academic excellence, and I am delighted that programs such as the Byrd scholarship exist to recognize students who excel academically," said superintendent of public instruction Deborah Delisle. "These students should be proud of what they have accomplished and I congratulate them for their diligence in achieving at high levels and for their commitment to academic success." Students are nominated by the administrators or counselors at their high school, or by scoring highly on the GED tests. The Byrd scholarship is awarded based on the nominee's grade-point average, class rank, ACT or SAT composite scores and other school and community-based activities. Scholarships are awarded by congressional district. This year, six students were selected from each of Ohio's 18 districts. Robert C. Byrd, senator from West Virginia, created this national program to promote student excellence and achievement throughout the nation. Nationally, more than 26,000 current and previous recipients benefit from this program. Comments
