HICKSVILLE -- Firefighters from four area fire departments responded to a silo fire this morning at the Hicksville Grain Co., 259 E. High St. At approximately 8:30 a.m., firefighters were called to a fire in a 115-foot tall grain silo. Reports indicated the silo was half full of wheat that had caught fire. Fire departments called to the scene were Hicksville, Defiance, Edgerton and Sherwood, while Delaware Township Fire Department was on standby. No cause of the fire was available at press time and at 9:30 a.m., firefighters were determining how to fight the blaze. No injuries were reported at press time. Assisting at the scene were Hicksville police and EMTs and the Defiance County Sheriff's Office. Law enforcement personnel closed Ohio 18, with truck traffic being detoured through Sherwood. A major fire struck Hicksville Grain in the 1990s. A fire at the then Hicksville branch of Defiance Landmark Inc. in September 1992 caused extensive damage to the facility and prompted the evacuation of approximately 150 residents from 70 homes. At that time, two tanks containing 30,000 gallons each of anhydrous ammonia became a threat when one of the elevator's storage buildings for feed and chemicals became fully engulfed in flames before spreading to a nearby building. Damage at that blaze was estimated at $500,000-$600,000. Comments
