ARCHBOLD -- From pre-school classes to PhD programs, Northwest State Community College students give credit to outstanding teachers who instill them with the confidence they need to be successful in the classroom and in life. Every year, NSCC takes the time to recognize those teachers who exemplify excellence by awarding the distinguished faculty award. This year, the award was given to three faculty members, Patricia Hofbauer, Diane Bechtel and Sherry Howard. "Everyone who received the award this year was very deserving," said Cindy Krueger, vice president for academics at Northwest State. "These three have contributed to the campus in many ways, not just in the classroom, but also in leadership roles on campus." Hofbauer has been an instructor in early childhood education for 22 years at NSCC. She currently serves as the program chair, and is well respected by her students. Along with her dedication in the classroom, she has also shown commitment to her own continuous development. She frequently attends conferences that keep her up-to-date on current trends and research that she can incorporate into her classes. She is also a member of a statewide Coalition of Early Childhood Instructors, and serves on the Ohio Board of Regents' TAG committee to develop standards for the early childhood program across state colleges and universities. Bechtel is an accounting instructor in the business technologies division. She has taught at the college for 29 years and has seen the classroom change from formal lectures and note taking to online classes and web-based presentations. Over the years, she has served on many campus committees. Currently she serves as the co-president for the education association at Northwest State, and is very active in assessing the accounting programs for accreditation by the Higher Learning Commission. Howard has been a full-time arts and sciences instructor for 15 years. She teaches in the humanities and is committed to setting high academic standards for her classes. On campus, she assists in developing core curriculum for her division and provides oversight of assessment activities in her area. She also actively serves on the education for sustainability committee where she coordinates the college's organic garden and native landscaping projects. Off campus, she serves the Ohio Board of Regents on the faculty subcommittee for transfer articulation and as the statewide arts and humanities coordinator for the transfer module. Nominations for the distinguished faculty award were submitted by students and fellow faculty members. Those nominations were then reviewed by a small committee made up of the vice president for academics and four fellow faculty members. The awards are presented at an employee recognition luncheon where the winners receive a customized award, and have their names added to a plaque that is permanently displayed on campus. Comments
