COLUMBUS -- A 2005 graduate of Fairview High School is going to become very familiar with the interior of the Jerome Schottenstein Center in Columbus after winning a year's supply of event tickets.

Andrew Hange, 21, son of Don and Ann Hange of Defiance, recently won an essay contest sponsored by TV channel 10 in Columbus. The prize is two tickets for each event scheduled at the center during 2009.

Hange was selected earlier this year as one of five finalists for the contest. He earned the grand prize for receiving the most online votes among the finalists.

"I thought I might have a chance to win the online vote. I utilized my Facebook page to get my friends to vote for me," Hange said.

"They called me the following Monday and told me I had won."

The contest called for entrants to write a short essay centered on their fondest memory experienced at the Schottenstein center.

Events scheduled at the Schottenstein in early 2009 include Ohio State men and women's basketball games, a monster truck show and a concert featuring the classic rock group, the Eagles.

Hange, a recent graduate of Ohio State with a degree in sports management, said he has already attended a variety of events at the "Schott," but will look to spend considerably more time in the arena in 2009.

"I go to a decent amount of concerts, but I will go to more this coming year," Hange said.

The Defiance native's essay was about his experience in the Schottenstein center during his freshman orientation in 2005. He said freshmen checked in at the center as they arrived for the first year of school. They were grouped according to which residence hall they would live in and began to meet classmates.

"It started with an overwhelming experience walking into the 20,000 capacity arena, but turned into one of my fondest memories as I officially became a Buckeye," the essay read.

"(Of) all my experiences with sporting events, concerts, and other shows and events, my freshman check-in has left a greater impression in my memory."

Hange said he completed his essay while working in his internship at the athletic office of Ohio State.

He appeared in a short video which accompanied his essay on the TV 10 website.

"It took about 10 minutes to touch it up. I made sure it had some details in it," Hange said.

The contest winner said tickets for the shows that he has won range from $10-$200 in value and indicated that friends and family will get priority as he seeks to find people to go to the events with him.

He said he is looking forward to attending state high school basketball championships at the center and the monster truck show scheduled later this year.

Hange, who participated in track and field, cross country and basketball while at Fairview, said he plans to attend graduate school in the near future and would like to obtain a job in the field of athletics.

"To be an athletic director would be my dream job," he said. "Sports have always been a big part of my life."
