SHERWOOD -- The Fairview Academic Association awarded four teachers grants at its October meeting. Recipients were Christie Pinney, Tim Manz, Trisha Schlachter and Beverly Singer.

Pinney, a high school science teacher, received $170 to further implement the modeling method of teaching for physical science. She plans the purchase of three tubs of magnetic marbles to represent atoms or subatomic particles. These marbles will be used to teach lessons on conservation of mass, atomic structure, molecular structure and chemical reactions.

The modeling method of teaching has been recognized as an "exemplary program" by the U.S. Department of Education. Students will benefit from usage of the materials. This modeling teaching method is recommended for both immediate understanding and long- term retention of concepts.

Singer and Schlachter, middle school math teachers, received $250 for registration in the Ohio seventh-grade pre-algebra and algebra I classroom math competitions. This grant will offer an opportunity for top level middle school math students to enter a statewide math competition. Singer and Schlachter will administer two tests to all math students in February and March.

The top five scores will be submitted for each level. Those students achieving top scores in the region will continue on in a final-four bracket playoff in March.

Manz, seventh-grade science teacher, has been awarded $300 for Science Olympiad registration and supplies. Manz organizes this science program at the Fairview Middle School. Students volunteer to participate in science projects that they complete after school and at home. With support from Manz, parents and community volunteers, they go on to a district competition where projects are displayed and evaluated.

Last year, Fairview students competed in 23 events achieving medals for the top four places.

The Fairview Academic Association is a group of parents and interested community members working together to support academics at the middle and high school. Meetings are at 7 p.m. the fourth Tuesday of each month in the high school library. The public is invited to attend.
