TOLEDO -- Continental fell short to top-ranked Ottawa Hills in Division III district finals boys soccer action at Toledo Central Catholic on Saturday, 5-1.
Brandon Burke scored the first goal of the game for the Pirates (9-8-2) before the Green Bears responded with five unanswered goals.
"We took it to them in the first half," said Continental head coach Brian Stegbauers. "We played on their end most of the half. They were not ready for our physical style of play. Ottawa Hills came out in the second half and were finally ready to play up to their number one ranking. I am very proud of our guys for playing as hard as they did and playing with a very good Ottawa Hills team."
Ottawa Hills stands 16-0-2 this season.
The Green Bears will take on Kalida in the regional semifinals on Tuesday after the Wildcats edged out Lima Central Catholic in their district final contest at Wapakoneta.
At Wapakoneta, TJ Metzger scored late in the second overtime to lift Ottawa-Glandorf to a 2-1 victory over Lima Shawnee in the Division II district final at Wapakoneta's Ryan Field.
Metzger's goal came on a free kick with 2:08 left in the second OT from the top of the 18 when he saw the Shawnee keeper out of position. His shot went off the right post, went across the goal mouth and eventually rolled into the net for the game-winner.
"It was a tough game," remarked O-G's Mike Weihrauch, whose team lost to Shawnee in the regular season 1-0 on an own goal. "They made some adjustments from the first game and made it a little bit more even as far as their attack goes. Both teams had their share of opportunities, but it definitely feels good to get the win, not just because it was them, but because we are still playing."
Shawnee (11-7-1) opened the scoring with 40 seconds left in the first half on a goal by Andrew Ritchie.
O-G's Matthew Kaufman tied the game less than 10 minutes into the second half on an assist from Metzger.
The Titans return to the regional level for the first time since 2009, then in Division III, and will play Bowling Green, a 2-1, double-overtime winner over Clear Fork.
At Wapakoneta, the Kalida boys soccer team kept its season alive in the Division III playoffs with a 1-0 victory over Lima Central Catholic on Saturday at Wapakoneta's Ryan Field.
