MASON -- The Napoleon girls water polo team will compete at the State Water Polo Championships on Friday at Mason High School after a second place finish at regionals.

The Wildcats (20-9) defeated Worthington Kilbourne 13-7 in the semifinal to earn a state berth before falling to Thomas Worthington in the regional finals, 11-7.

"All games were competitive," admitted Napoleon coach Jay Finn. "But certainly Thomas Worthington and Upper Arlington are the favored teams."

The Wildcats have been led all year by leading scorers Erica Vocke (senior), Samantha Bloom (junior), Mackenzie Garringer (junior) and Kate Sworden (freshman). Also starting for the Wildcats will be Allison Seemann, Katie Stover and standout goalie Jesse Sworden.

"Madeline Creager sometimes starts in place of Katie Stover, and the two of them split time at the final field position," explained Finn. "Vocke and Jesse Sworden were first team all North Regional last week."

Other key players for Napoleon are Catlyne Spencer, Chloe McKay and Claudia DelFavero.

The Wildcats have won four state championships in water polo under former coach Larry Vocke (1996, '97, '98, '99), while also finishing as state runner-up in 1991, '92, '95 and 2000.

Napoleon will face defending state champion Upper Arlington on Friday at Mason High School at 6:15 p.m.
