GROVER HILL -- The GMC cross country championship was held Saturday morning with the Fairview Apaches taking top honors in the boys race, while the Tinora Rams finished first in the girls race.
In the boys race, the Apaches took first place with a score of 37. Ayersville finished second with a score of 80 while Tinora placed third with a score of 101.
"I can't tell you how happy I am," said an elated Fairview head coach Curt Foust. "This is one of the best days of my coaching career. I believe we came in as underdogs but we stuck to our plan, took chances when we needed to and had good finishes."
Defending champion Kyle Thomas of Fairview took first place in the boys race with a time of 16:50. Colin Krick of Antwerp placed second while Sam Lehman of Tinora finished third.
"I have to give thanks to my coach," stated Thomas. "He has been the best motivator for me and has helped me train this summer and fall. It all paid off today.
In the girls race, the Tinora Rams placed first with a score of 47. Fairview finished second with 61 points and Antwerp took third with 78 points.
"The girls ran well and went out and did what we wanted them to as a team," stated Rams' head coach Lisa Maxwell.
Individually, Hannah McKibben of Ayersville defended her title from last year by taking top honors with a time of 20:44. Emma Bowden of Tinora finished second while Malin Adams of Fairview took third.
"This is an amazing feeling," said McKibben. "I am truly blessed."
Ayersville head coach Alexis Zippay said: "Hannah is a great athlete. She has been training hard this summer and definitely deserves this."
