ARLINGTON -- The Defiance girls golf team shot its best score ever at the Sycamore Springs District Championship on Tuesday but fell a few positions short of making it to Columbus as Lima Central Catholic (365), Sandusky Perkins (367) and Van Buren (380) were the top three teams.
Defiance shot a 395 and Fairview posted a 399 as the two squads wrapped up their seasons.
Marisa Behringer shot a team-best 94 with a 48 on the front nine and a 46 on the back nine for Defiance, while Lindsay Froelich carded a 98 with a 53 and a 45 to pace the Bulldogs.
"I was really happy with the way we played today," commented Defiance mentor Martha Mallott. "The back nine was a lot better for the girls, but to have the best score ever for a DHS team at Sycamore Springs makes me very happy."
Sheri Sheffel shot a 101 and Nakea Jackson a 102 to round out the top four scores for DHS, while Val Shepherd shot a 107 for the Bulldogs.
"All five who competed today will be back next year," said Mallott. "So the girls know that they have their work cut out for them to improve upon what they did this year."
Alex Keesbury of Fairview shot a 38 on the front nine and a 47 on the back nine for an 18-hole total of 85, which was just four strokes behind an individual qualifying spot.
Woodmore's Mikayla Baer (78), Clyde's Lhing Worathanawong (79) and Lakota's Makayla Dull (81) had the top three individual scores on a non-qualifying team. Sarah Wells (98), Emily Wells (99) and Tyler Starry (117) joined Keesbury as the four lowest scores for the Apaches with Megan Groves finishing with a 118.
Tinora's Candi Keller shot an 89 (42-47), eight strokes out of a qualifying spot.
