Local referendum petition drive fails

A Defiance City Council ordinance passed last month concerning the former Defiance Hospital property wont be subjected to a referendum. The ordinance, passed by council on Aug. 5 by a 4-3 vote, approved a memorandum of understanding with ProMedica Health Systems that turns the former hospital property on East Second Street back to city control. But not long after the ordinance was approved, three city residents Henry Zech, 870 S. Clinton St.; Patricia Shawley, 1413 S. Jackson Ave.; and Trudy Smith, 2108 S. Jefferson Ave. took out referendum petitions that would have placed the issue before city voters in November 2004. To qualify, the petitions needed 424 valid signatures, certified by the countys election board, within 30 days of the ordinances passage.
