Defiance Toastmasters to offer open house

Published:

Simply Speaking Toastmasters of Defiance will celebrate the 87th birthday of Toastmasters International at an open house on Thursday from 5:30-7:30 p.m. in the Northtowne Mall community room.

In October 1924, Ralph C. Smedley held the first meeting at a YMCA building in Santa Ana, Calif. The club, later known as Toastmasters International, was based on a social atmosphere that would support speaking skills in a supportive, informal environment.

Over the next three decades the number of Toastmaster clubs grew and the educational programs evolved to support individual growth in leadership and speaking skills.

Today there are more than 13,000 clubs and more than 270,000 members in 116 countries. Simply Speaking Toastmasters of Defiance was formed 16 years ago. A group of Defiance area individuals saw a need to develop their individual skills in leadership and communication. Since that time, meetings have been held on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month. At the open house, the members will demonstrate what goes on at a club meeting and have presentations on the value of Toastmasters in our world today.
