Alva F Clemens, 89, of Defiance, passed away on Friday, January 18, 2013 at the Parkview Regional Medical Center, Ft. Wayne, IN.

He was born on March 7, 1923 to Peter and Martha (Meyers) Clemens in Paulding Co., OH. On August 9, 1947 he married Jean M. Lantow and she passed away on November 19, 1992.

Alva was a member of Defiance Christian Church. He served as a mortarman with the 330th Infantry Regiment from 1943-46 in the United States Army during WWII. He worked at the former Serrick's (Defiance Screw Machine) and Defiance Precision Products for 40 years, retiring in 1986. He was known as "Pop" or "Popi" to many. Alva was an OSU fan, enjoyed cooking, gardening, fishing and the outdoors.

Alva is survived by his daughters, Jean (Richard) Caldwell of Oblong, IL, Linda (Walter) Beardsley of Ayersville, Bonnie Fos-naugh of Defiance, Diana (John) Ater of Brilliant, OH, Kathy Clemens of Defiance, Mary (Wayne) Erickson of Defiance, Sandra (Doug) Klausing of Defiance and Melody Hope (Jeremy) Thompson of Defiance; and 35 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; an infant daughter; brothers, William, Joe, George, Harvey, Ward, Jim and Peter Clemens; sisters Maude Tuohy and Violet Andrist.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, January 21, 2013, at Defiance Christian Church with Minister Don Hatfield and Pastor Bill Mesaeh, Jr. officiating. Entombment will follow at Riverview Memory Gardens, Defi-ance. Visitation will be held from 2-8 p.m. Sunday at Hanenkrath-Clevenger-Schaffer Funeral Home, Defiance, and one hour prior to the funeral at the church.
