NAPOLEON -- William "Bill" Elling, 82, of Napoleon, Ohio, died peacefully surrounded by his loving family after a courageous battle with cancer on Sunday, January 6, 2013, at his residence.
He was born on September 3, 1930, in Napoleon Township, to the late Fred F. and Henrietta (Plassman) Elling. On December 6, 1953, he married Lorna (Meienburg) Elling at St. John Lutheran Church, Freedom Township.
Bill started his career path as a plumber in 1947, working for Merle Franz Plumbing and Heating and Standard Plumbing. In 1965, he started Bill's Plumbing and Heating and retired in 1993. Bill was a faithful member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Napoleon, where he served as a former trustee. He was also a member of American Legion Post 300, VFW Post 8218 and AMVETS Post 1313, all of Napoleon. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War. Bill loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also loved camping, boating, fishing and polka dancing.
He is survived by his wife, Lorna; children, Randall (Debra) Elling, Debra (Richard) Riebesel, Kevin (Linda) Elling and Cheryl (Kevin) Kent; grandchildren, Stacy (Ross) Gerken, Justin (Sara) Riebesel, Jeremy Riebesel, Brian (Catherine) Elling, Kelsey Elling, Ryan Kent, and Taylor Kent; and great-grandchildren, Ava Elling and Austin Gerken; sisters, Margeruite Meyer and Carolyn (Roger) Bunke; and sister-in-law, Melba Elling.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Joshua Elling; and brother, Earl Elling.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, January 10, 2013, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Napoleon. Entombment will follow at Riverview Memory Gardens, Defiance, where military honors will be accorded by the Napoleon Joint Veteran Posts. Visitation will be held from 2-8 p.m. Wednesday at Rodenberger Funeral Home, Napoleon, and 9:30-10:30 a.m. Thursday at the church.
