Infant survives, mother dies after accident

PERRYSBURG -- A Toledo woman who was nine months pregnant died but EMS personnel were able to save her baby following a two-vehicle accident in Perrysburg Township late Thursday afternoon.The Bowling Green Post of the Ohio Highway Patrol reports that Rachel M. Kominek, 26, was pronounced dead at the scene. The infant was taken to St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center by air ambulance.Her husband, Dustin, 24, also of Toledo, who was driving, was ejected from the vehicle, sustaining non-life-threatening injuries. He was transported to St. Luke's Hospital, Maumee.The accident occurred at 5:09 p.m. on US 20 at the intersection of Tracy Road.According to the OSP the Kominek vehicle was eastbound on Route 20 when he attempted to turn northbound onto Thompson Road, lost control on the snow covered roadway and came to rest in the intersection. A westbound vehicle on Route 20 driven by Melissa S. Domanowski, 33, of Williston, struck the Kominek vehicle in the passenger side door.Domanowski and a passenger in her vehicle, Jillian E. Sheetz, 34, of Oregon, both sustained non-life threatening injuries and were transported to St. Charles Hospital, Toledo. The OSP reported that all occupants were wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, except for Mr. Kominek. Alcohol use is not believed to be a factor, and the crash remains under investigation.
