PUT-IN-BAY, Ohio (AP) -- A man accused in the beating death of a Cleveland-area man on a Lake Erie resort island has pleaded guilty to lesser charges.
Zachary Brody of Bowling Green pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and tampering with evidence in the fight that happened over Labor Day weekend.
Prosecutors on Monday agreed to drop charges that included murder and voluntary manslaughter.
Investigators say the two men got into an argument at a party in Put-in-Bay on South Bass Island where the victim, 25-year-old Phil Masterson of Westlake, was staying.
Both men had training in mixed martial arts.
Brody's attorney says he was only acting in self-defense and didn't mean to kill Masterson. Brody will face up to 16 years in prison when he's sentenced in May.
