ADA, Ohio (AP) -- Police say fire has destroyed a church in northwest Ohio where children in a day care in the building had to be evacuated.

The Lima News reports ( ) that a police officer on patrol noticed smoke coming out of a door of the First United Methodist Church in downtown Ada around noon Tuesday.

Police chief Michael Harnishfeger (HAR'-nihsh-feh-gur) says the officer was able to help the day care's employees and children escape safely, and no injuries were reported.

Firefighters managed to extinguish most of the fire within a couple of hours. Authorities have not determined the cause. Officials from the State Fire Marshal's office are investigating.

The church's website says it was formed in 1852 and moved to the current site in 1899.
