Disappointing Anzhi held by Newcastle 0-0

LONDON (AP) -- Big-spending Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala endured a frustrating night in the Europa League on Thursday, drawing 0-0 at home to Newcastle in their last-16 first leg and losing recent signing Willian to a first-half injury.

With its domestic campaign resuming this weekend after the winter break, Anzhi lacked match sharpness and barely troubled Newcastle's packed defense except for two shots from Samuel Eto'o that were well saved by Rob Elliot.

Newcastle, whose players joined the match officials in wearing leggings and long sleeves in sub-zero temperatures in Moscow, had one great scoring opportunity -- a one-on-one chance that fit-again France playmaker Hatem Ben Arfa failed to take.

Willian, signed from Shakhtar Donetsk last month, came off with an apparent ankle injury in the 22nd minute.
