Duathlete Silva loses world title for doping

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) -- World duathlon champion Sergio Silva has been stripped of his gold medal after testing positive for a banned stimulant following the race.

However, the Portuguese athlete will serve only a six-month doping ban instead of two years after the International Triathlon Union decided he acted "with no intent of enhancing his performance."

Silva tested positive for methylhexaneamine after the championships held last September in Dijon, Spain. The ITU says Silva was "persuasive" explaining to its anti-doping panel "that he took the substance inadvertently."

The governing body says Silva took "flawed advice" from a nutritionist to use a supplement called "Top Fuel Launch" containing geranium oil.

Silva's ban expires May 9.
