Summary Box: Fidelity 401(k)s hold steady in 2011

The Associated Press Published:

401(k) BALANCES STEADY: Fidelity Investments on Thursday said the year-end balance for participants in its 401(k) plans averaged $69,100. That's down slightly from $69,400 in 2010, according to the nation's biggest 401(k) administrator.

RISING CONTRIBUTIONS: The average slipped despite a slight increase in employee contributions. Participants set aside an average $5,750 through paycheck deductions, compared with $5,680 a year earlier. Matching contributions from employers also rose slightly.

OTHER FACTORS: The balance boost workers received from higher contributions was offset by lackluster investment performance, and fees paid to manage the money and administer plans.
